The People's Crusade

Mark Steyn doesn't dismiss the idea that Westerners will learn from the jihadis that threats and actual violence get you what you want:

As in Ulster, there’ll be groups who think the state power is too wimpy to hit back, and will make their own arrangements. There will be plenty of non-state actors on the non-Islamic side.

As long as our government fights the jihadis, our people will, with few exceptions, let the government fight the enemy. But if enough of our people think the government is not defending us--the basic function of a government--people will self-organize and wage an offensive war against the jihadis.

If I'm right about Europe reacting harshly to the threat of Islamo-fascism when comforting denial becomes impossible, we would expect to seen this trend start in Europe long before it starts here--unless we return to the law enforcement mode in 2009, of course.

If the jihadis make good on threats to strike in Europe, or if the car-torching rate in France gets too high, European non-state actors will be the first to privatize the war on terror. And Europeans have a talent for war, lest you forget.
