Red Storm Rising?

Russia is demonstrating that its army and air support are inadequate for offensive operations. The West should welcome Russia investing inadequate defense resources in a prestige navy.

I think this is a major waste of Russian money. And as long as Russia is stubbornly hostile to the West, I welcome Russia's focus on retaining large Soviet-era ships

Why spend all that money on five aging warships? First, it’s about prestige. Any of these five ships can make long range cruises and do port visits in countries Russia is trying to impress, or intimidate. Second; practicality. By installing new and improved weapons on these ships they can be sent on these long voyages with minimal escorts (usually one destroyer or frigate) plus one supply ship. Finally, the upgrades do produce some major warships that not only look impressive but have some real combat power.

Imagine if that money had gone to improve Russia's army and air force?

Russia's blue water ambitions are self destructive. Russia needs SSBNs for a survivable nuclear deterrent, ships and submarines to defend those SSBNs in bastions off of northwestern and eastern Russia, and a glorified and well armed coast guard.

Otherwise, Russia has long borders on the Arctic Sea, in the west, in the Caucasus, in Central Asia, and in the Far East that need defending with ground and/or air power.

I think we should be happy if Russia builds new aircraft carriers. I salivate at the thought of the army and air force investments that would not be made to put those missile magnets to sea.

Of course, if Russia finally ends its pointless hostility toward the West and instead pivots to face the threats from China, never mind.
