Emperor of the Broken

Sadly, it looks like the only way Maduro will leave office is if every other Venezuelan flees the country or is shot by Maduro's security goons, leaving no subjects to oppress and loot.

What a truly lawless ruler looks like:

Venezuela’s authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro, moved on Sunday to consolidate his grip on power by taking control of the country’s last independent institution and sidelining the lawmaker who had staked a rival claim to the presidency.

As Mr. Maduro’s security forces surrounded the National Assembly building, his supporters blocked the re-election of the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, as the body’s head. That deprived Mr. Guaidó of the position that allowed him challenge to Mr. Maduro’s leadership. ...

The political chaos comes at a time when Venezuela is facing economic collapse. Hunger is widespread, and millions have fled the country.

Socialism* doesn't make everyone equally prosperous. It makes everyone--those who haven't fled, been killed, or been arrested--who isn't the ruler or in the ruling class equally impoverished.

And by grinding down the people to the point where any small handout from the rulers is the difference between life and death, Maduro could survive in his palace, as the emperor of the broken.

If American liberals truly were a Resistance to tyranny, they'd be starving and hunted rather that partying at glitzy awards shows or virtue signaling their opposition on social media.

*I thought I'd throw that in because the article author doesn't think it is relevant to the economic collapse, widespread hunger, and flight of millions abroad.
