Too Soon

President Assad of Syria believes he should have gotten the Nobel Peace Prize this year. I know standards have slipped, but not that far--yet.

Seriously?

Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, has joked that he deserved to win the Nobel Peace Prize after it was awarded to the international weapons watchdog currently destroying his regime's massive chemical arsenal.

The prize, which was given to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on Friday, "should have been mine," he said.

Yeah. He was "joking." Too soon, right?

But not that far off. It used to be that if you were a murderous despot you had to actually stop killing to get the prize as your reward.

Now Assad thinks that just killing the Obama-approved way is good enough?

Too soon. But maybe next year the full beclowning of the prize will be ripe for such an honor.
