The Viking Funeral Ride

So North Korea's bout of threatening insanity isn't about fear of American military power? He really just wants to show he's in charge there?

Huh:

Top U.S. intelligence officials say North Korea's new leader is trying to show the world and his people that he is in charge, rather than trying to trigger military conflict.

Because nothing says "I'm in charge" like ordering your minions into the boat for the Viking funeral ride with you at the helm, and watching them dutifully file on board with the matches and gasoline, amidst a lovely choregraphed salute to your genius.

Pray tell, how does this end peacefully with a result that shows Kim Jong Un's subjects that he's in charge?

At least Clapper admitted we have no idea how North Korea would define regime survival in the context of using nukes. Their rational is different than our rational.
