Once More, With Feeling

Iran sent to sea a Russian-built submarine and a locally designed "destroyer" to take the spotlight off of our maneuvers in the region:

Iran's refitted Tareq-901 submarine and Sahand destroyer were launched on the direct orders of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Sahand, eh? We sank the last one back in 1988.

We sank the vessel with carrier-based attack aircraft.

I mention this not to goad Iran, but to remind people that we don't need to sail into the Persian Gulf for a close quarters fur ball of a fight against Iran's light naval irregulars. Shoot, I don't like the idea of putting our "littoral combat ships" into the littorals.

We've got the range advantage. Use it.

Also, the new Iranian "destroyer" is actually quite the promotion for a ship that at best is a frigate and is probably just a corvette. But warship types are odd. Our "destroyers" are really cruisers by displacement.
