Your Daily Moment of Clarity

Iran denies that they want nuclear technology in order to build atomic weapons. No, they insist, they want nuclear power in order to replace domestic use of oil that Iran can then export in order to bolster their economy.

Too many Westerners believe this is true and figure Iranian comments about erasing Israel from the map or kicking the West out of the Middle East are irrelevant to the nuclear question.

With sanctions about to kick up to a higher gear, the Iranian oil minister responds:

"We will not abandon our just nuclear course, even if we cannot sell one drop of oil," Rostam Qasemi told reporters, according to IRNA.

So Iran is so determined to help their economy by pursuing nuclear energy for domestic consumption and freeing up oil for export that they are willing to wreck their economy under sanctions and live with the lack of oil exports.

I'm thinking there's a hole in Iran's alibi. Or perhaps I just lack the nuance gene.

UPDATE: We may not do anything about Iran, but at least our government ran out of excuses for why there is no Iran problem (that can't be solved by an outstretched hand).
