People Didn't Know This?

I find this shocking:

The original outlet and factory stores sold overstocked, discontinued items, and imperfect merchandise unfit for retail sale; that’s what made the prices so cheap. But nowadays, the majority of common outlet stores supplement their stock with merchandise created especially for outlet-store sale. These lines carry the brand name, but they’re made with lower-quality fabrics and cheaper construction techniques.

Not the concept. That's been obvious for many years. What is shocking is that an article assumes people don't know this.

Really? With modern production and inventory methods, people really think that there are enough overstocked, discontinued, and imperfect merchandise to fully stock all those outlet malls that have sprouted across the land? Seriously? Just stopping to think about it should answer the question.

I don't think I've been to an "outlet" store in at least a couple decades. It is better to just hunt your usual stores for sales on items they sell if you want a good deal. As far as I'm concerned, outlet malls are a complete waste of money. And if you travel long distances for the chance to purchase their stuff, it cost you even more.

Of course, if you are willing to pay the cost for the psychological satisfaction of believing you saved money, who am I to tell you you're wrong. It's just money and you can't take it with you, after all. Heck, I can't even rule out that you might find a good deal.
