Bear Hug

Yeah, what the heck. It was fun being independent and free, but Ukrainians have had enough, I guess:

Ukraine's new governing coalition in parliament said Tuesday it will pass a law against joining military alliances such as NATO, a move that is sure to please Russia while tilting Ukraine away from its previous pro-Western course.

In a statement of purpose published Tuesday in the parliament's official newspaper, the coalition supporting President Viktor Yanukovych said new legislation will "enshrine Ukraine's nonaligned status in law."

As if Moscow will be happy with "nonaligned status" for Ukraine! Failing to ask "how high?" when Moscow tells Kiev to jump will be a dangerous sign of Westward drift as far as the Kremlin in concerned.

Ukraine had the choice of being free within NATO or being a vassal state to Russia. They've chosen. Good luck with that.
