The headline says North Korea may have up to 50 nuclear weapons. The story is quite different.
But the reality is something I've been complaining about for a long time. We don't know if North Korea has nukes:
SIPRI has based its estimates of North Korea’s nuclear inventory on the number of weapons that the DPRK could build with the fissile material that it has available to it. The report also notes that there is no available evidence suggesting that North Korea has produced a nuclear weapon for use on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), though North Korea may have smaller warheads for use on medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs) available.
That's it. We don't know if North Korea has nuclear weapons. They have nuclear fissile material. They have nuclear devices that can be detonated by thousands of scientists and technicians.
But more than that we cannot say for sure.
Not that I'm unconcerned about North Korea. But I hope our intelligence people have more solid information upon which we can base our decisions on what we should do about North Korea.
