Europe is Not Worthy of Fawning Admiration

This article rejects the notion that continental Europe is some sort of center-left Utopia of enlightened policies and governance:

Right-thinking Britons see their country as an embarrassment sliding towards populism, a sad contrast to the moral superpower that is Germany and France under centrist leader Emmanuel Macron. Yet the Continent of the Anglo liberal imagination is as unreal as the supposed nostalgic Britain of yesteryear loved by Leavers.

The article provides country-by-country explanations in defense of the argument.

It is humorous that the panty-flinging fanboys (and girls) of Europe extol the superb nuance of European thinking but spare none at all for the reality of Europe as it is.

And yeah, I've said much the same thing rejecting the moral superiority of Europe:

The unofficial reason for NATO after World War II was to "keep American in (Europe--unlike after World War I), keep the Russians (Soviets) out (of Western Europe, after the Soviets advance to the Elbe River), and keep Germany down (after starting two world wars)."

The modern purpose of NATO is to keep America in Europe, keep Russia out, and keep European autocratic impulses down. The third reason is a real threat that is easy to forget in the post-World War II time frame that we remember as the normal state of European affairs. And the first reason is the means to achieve the third.

We forget the role that America played in creating the free and democratic Europe that we wrongly assume is the natural state of now-free Europe[.]

The continent is filled with barely restrained autocrats. We should not pretend they are our moral superiors. Nor should we pretend that that the EU won't enable the wannabe autocrats.
