Under the proposal, [Air Force Secretary Heather] Wilson would oversee the Space Force, just as Navy Secretary Richard Spencer oversees the Marine Corps. The proposal also calls for creating a Space Force undersecretary below Wilson, along with two four-star billets: a chief of staff who would be a member of the Joint Chiefs, and a vice chief of staff.
That's long been my view (and I refined that notion in more posts over the years). The Air Force should add the "black skies" of space to their "blue skies" traditional missions. It is a natural fit.
Now all the Air Force needs to do to make me really happy is give up the close air support mission (and the money and assets that go with that mission) to the Army in the "brown skies" above the battlefield--a mission the Air Force clearly doesn't prioritize--and let the Army figure out whether manned fixed wing or rotary wing aircraft--or drones or ground-based fires assets, for that matter--are the means (in whatever mix seems right) of providing fire support to Army ground forces.
