When Did Canada Stop Being an American Ally?

Excuse me?

Behind the arrest is a U.S.-China conflict that is not just a trade war, but a technology war in which Canada is caught in the middle – and that war’s headlong geopolitical competition is hurtling toward a crisis.

Canada is "caught in the middle?"

Is China not stealing a lot of technology from the West to build an economy and military to rival America and rewrite the rules that the world--including Canada--has done so well under since World War II?

Is not Canada a formal treaty ally of the United States?

When did Canada becomes a neutral that hopes to avoid getting hurt when great powers compete over whether dystopian state China or free America dominates the world and sets the rules?

Where is the author's coveted nuance in that choice?

What the Hell happened to the Canada that bled with our troops in Afghanistan to defeat one threat to the West and its freedoms?

UPDATE: Canadian complaints that we aren't being an ally and that Canada is "alone in the world" because we don't back them in a diplomatic dispute over human rights with Saudi Arabia is ridiculous.

The moment Saudi Arabia is a real threat to Canada we will protect Canada. Until then, we need Saudi Arabia despite their awful human rights record to stop Iran's drive to build a new Persian Empire across the Middle East backed by nuclear weapons.

And really, if Saudi Arabia is responding to Canadian punishment over human rights by withholding Saudi money, shouldn't Canada have blocked that money in the first place on principle?

Honestly, this Canada-Saudi issue went from a "spat" to a vital Canadian interest that requires the activation of a military alliance to prove our friendship?
