A Matter of Making Rubble or Saving Rubles?

What on Earth are the Russians up to?

Russia is ordering all of its officials to fly home any relatives living abroad amid heightened tensions over the prospect of global war, it has been claimed.

Politicians and high-ranking figures are said to have received a warning from president Vladimir Putin to bring their loved-ones home to the 'Motherland', according to local media. ...

According to the Russian site Znak.com, administration staff, regional administrators, lawmakers of all levels and employees of public corporations have been ordered to take their children out of foreign schools immediately.

Failure to act will see officials jeopardising their chances of promotion, local media has reported.

The exact reason for the order is not yet clear.

But Russian political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky is quoted by the Daily Star as saying: 'This is all part of the package of measures to prepare elites to some 'big war'.'

Russian preparations for a "big war" makes no sense as an excuse. Russia seems incapable of waging small campaigns in Ukraine and Syria simultaneously let alone waging war on both coasts of Russia--let alone globally against America and our allies. (Although it is far from peace, to be sure.)

As if we or other nations would arrest families of diplomatic personnel. Really, if Russia went to war with America, why would Russians everywhere be at risk?

I'm just guessing, but I'd say that Russia perhaps finds that they can't pay for having too many people overseas or in foreign schools, and wants excess people home.

Although I'm not sure about the connection between bringing families home and the school part, which is written as if it is all one thing but are rather different things, no? Is the latter just to cloud the former? Does Russia provide foreign currencies for foreign schools that Russian officials use?

But on the officials abroad part, at least, Russia would not want to admit to shortages of money, so would prefer to rattle sabres confident in the knowledge that no such war is planned--and confident that America will hardly respond in kind at the provocative explanation leaked out.

But I'm guessing. But Russia isn't preparing for global war and if they were, bringing family members home right now makes no sense as a preparation if they were.
