Deterrence Will Work

The people who think we should live with a nuclear-armed Iran sure are a bloody-minded lot.

If you think we should try to live with a nuclear-armed Iran run by nutball mullahs, is this really your fall back position?

Hammess [of National Defense University] said if Iran ever manufactures nuclear weapons and decides to use them, Israel will probably destroy that country. If not Israel, says Hammess, then the United States probably will.

The threat to destroy Iran is supposed to deter them. So we're to assume that it is possible that the mullahs won't be deterred.

And in those circumstances we'll really "destroy" Iran? Which means killing tens of millions of people, of course.

No, if Iran uses a nuke, many here will argue that we shouldn't make things worse by launching a counter-strike. After all, what if Iran has more nukes to use, it will be argued? And we're better than them, of course, so why descend to their level?

So we won't launch a nuclear strike. I guess that deterrence will work, after all. And countries around the world will take note.

Yeah, that's far superior to stopping Iran from going nuclear in the first place by attacking their nuclear infrastructure.
