I've been happy that the Taiwanese government has reacted to the loss of superiority in the Taiwan Strait by withdrawing troops from futile missions to defend those islands that lie close to China. The garrisons would not contribute to the decisive battle on the main island and just risked giving other Chinese forces not needed for the invasion something useful to do to gain an early victory and demoralize other Taiwanese troops.
More troops are leaving their exposed positions:
Taiwan plans to withdraw troops from two islets near the Chinese mainland and will turn the former battleground into a tourist attraction as relations improve, officials said today.
The islands are Tatan and Ertan, which are part of the Kinmen islands.
Rather than turn them into tourist attractions, I'd fortify them with robotic defenders.
