Iranians are blaming their government for their economic problems:
The mullahs of Iran have some unpleasant news to digest; police and rioters were fighting today in the streets of Tehran as unhappiness over the country’s collapsing currency and decrepit economy boiled over into violence. As the New York Times reports, protesters linked the regime’s unpopular foreign policy with their domestic woes. The Times story says that one demonstrator apparently shouted that “They spend billions of dollars to keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power, but now they say they have no money!”
One: Huh. I thought our pressure would just cause Iranians to rally to the mullah regime. Apparently not.
Two, as Iranians take to the streets, our Secretary of State begs the mullahs to pretend to give in to our economic sanction before our November election:
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held out the possibility on Wednesday that sanctions on Iran could be eased quickly if Tehran worked with major powers to address questions about its nuclear program.
Speaking to reporters about protests in Iran triggered by the collapse of the Iranian currency, which has lost 40 percent of its value against the dollar in a week, Clinton blamed the Iranian government - rather than Western sanctions - for the financial troubles.
The Obama administration doesn't want to solve the Iran problem. They just want to avoid looking like they are failing to solve the Iran problem for the next month.
