Nature Kills a Lot

I didn't realize that the Philippines was hammered as badly as it was in December:

Philippine President Benigno Aquino declared on Tuesday a state of national calamity after flash floods and land slides caused by a typhoon swept through a southern region late last week, killing about 1,000 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

Good grief, those poor people. Authorities must have reacted pretty well since I don't remember stories over the holidays about the tragedy. I know I was busy, but surely I would have paid attention to that.
