We Just Can't Trust Them

Libya under Khaddafi didn't stay fully flipped for long, it seems. Yes, we got their nuclear program shut down, but Khaddafi still wanted chemical weapons. Perhaps no self respecting thug ruler goes to their conventions without being able to say you have them.

And other thug regimes in the club apparently won't say no to helping out a pal in need:

The United States is investigating whether Iran sent hundreds of special artillery shells for chemical weapons to the late Moamer Kadhafi regime in Libya, The Washington Post reported late Sunday.

The shells, which Libya had filled with mustard gas, were discovered in recent weeks at two [sites] in central Libya, the Post said citing unnamed US and Libyan officials.

US intelligence is leading a probe of the origin of the shells, the report added.

"We are pretty sure we know" that the shells were designed and produced in Iran and intended Libya, a senior US official told the newspaper said on the condition of anonymity.

Another US official told the Post there were "serious concerns" that Iran had provided shells, but it had occurred some some years ago, said the report.

So Iran sent chemical shells to Libya. Huh. I'm sure they'd draw the line at sharing nuclear or biological components are capabilities. I mean, "outreach" has to kick in at some point, right? Surely the soothing balms of hope and change will heal what ails the mullahs eventually. Right?

Thug regimes just can't be trusted. And if we can't get Russia and China to help tame their little rabid dog pals, maybe we should share nuclear weapons technology with countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Georgia, Poland, and Ukraine, who might also like an ultimate deterrent to prevent invasion. Reset that, eh?

No matter how much we might think we can work with thug regimes, we just can't trust them.
