Das Boot. Crikey.

The boat. As in one boat. That is, Australia has but one submarine to defend their island continent:

The January 2010 failure of a generator aboard HMAS Farncomb is just the latest problem faced by its fleet of 6 Collins Class diesel-electric submarines – which are now reduced to just 1 operational vessel. That readiness issue presents an immediate financial headache for Australia’s government, and adds a longer-term challenge to the centerpiece of Australia’s future naval force.

Australia is wisely looking to make their main line of defense centered on submarines (and aircraft), which are the most survivable naval platform that can fight and live until American help can arrive.

If Australia can't man and maintain 6, how will they deploy a force of 12 (that routinely puts 4 at sea)?
