When Beer Goggles Fade

The Taiwanese seem to have woken up to notice that their dream date from the night before isn't as charming as it once seemed:

Ma reiterated his determination to safeguard Taiwan against China's military threat.

"We are seeking peace in the Taiwan Strait, but we will not sacrifice Taiwan's defense security for that," he said in a speech at his Presidential Office. "We will develop a professional military ... to defend Taiwan."

I hope President Ma is sincere in seeking to rearm in the face of Peking's unrelenting military build up aimed at crushing Taiwan.

It won't be long, I hope, before the Taiwanese are gnawing off their arm to escape the embrace of Peking lest they wake the grotesque brute they've brought home.
