Saving Taiwan from Themselves

I do hope that Taiwanese are under few delusions about what China has in store for them should Taiwan and China be unified, whether by agreement or conquest. If Taiwanese think democracy will endure under China's rule, consider China's comments on Kenya's election violence:

Pre-colonial Africa had plenty of consultative decision-making frameworks, but those were ignored when former European rulers "tyrannically" imposed Western democratic systems upon independence, the People's Daily newspaper said in a commentary Monday.

"Western-style democratic theory simply isn't suited to African conditions, but rather carries with it the root of disaster," said the paper, the official mouthpiece of China's ruling Communist Party.

No doubt, should Taiwan be absorbed into China, Peking would correct the grave mistake of allowing the West to impose democracy on Taiwan, which is clearly unsuited for Taiwanese conditions. Some other consultative decision-making framework would surely be more suitable. The Taiwanese should welcome their new communist overlords, right?

Never be confused about China's ultimate intentions.
