Wag the Dog

Our enemy fights among civilians and figures they win whether we hold our fire or shoot and accidentally kill innocents.

Amazingly enough, the enemy in Afghanistan has found that the lack of our atrocities or careless violence is no reason they can't try to drum up propaganda victories about dead innocent civilians. The press has noticed the issue of whether we are really killing innocent civilians:

U.S. and NATO leaders, however, said they have no information to substantiate the claims, and a U.S. official said Taliban fighters are forcing villagers to say civilians died in fighting — whether or not it is true.

Even the government officials who reported the deaths Saturday could not confirm the claims, which came from dangerous and remote regions inaccessible to journalists and other independent researchers.

The claims and denials of civilian casualties are part of an increasing campaign of information warfare the Taliban and Western militaries have engaged in alongside conventional fighting.

We are seeing the war of press releases. A way of fighting that isn't as silly as it seems given our leadership class that is eager to be chased off and is only looking for an excuse to run.

It's not "war." It is a Pageant.
