Recycled Armor

Interesting pictures on TV of Israeli armored personnel carriers being moved up to the border with Lebanon.

The pictures are of modified T-54/55s captured in long ago wars with Arab armies. In 1973 and after, the Israelis used them as tanks.

But now, these hopelessly obsolete tanks have a new lease on life as a heavily armored infantry carrier. With the turret removed and the hull modified to hold infantry, this ancient former tank provides much more protection than thin-skinned M-113 derivatives.

Israel has used old Centurian tanks for this, too.

Recycling is good.
